On the morning of August 2, 2011, the well-known musical icon and songwriter Candy Tsamandebele (affectionately known as Aunty Candy) was preparing for a momentous meeting to sign a Partnership contract with Sony Music Africa, a significant milestone in her career. Seeking to avoid any distractions on this important day, she made sure she had turned off her cell phone temporarily—an action she regrets to this day.

Losing Phetole

Upon turning her phone back on after completing her preparations, she was met with a barrage of missed calls and messages from various individuals. In the excitement of the upcoming partnership, she postponed responding to the messages until after the meeting.

The fateful call came from her uncle, Lebeko Albert Malematja, who had heart-wrenching news to share. Sensing her urgency, he conveyed the tragic accident involving her son but struggled to break the devastating news directly. Her brother, Dr Masilu Mokwena, spoke to her with honesty and compassion, informing her of Phetole’s passing in a car accident that occurred around 6:30 am to 6:55 am at Belleview Village on his way to Giyani. The accident claimed four lives, including Phetole’s, leaving behind immense grief and sorrow.
