This Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women from Limpopo who have excelled in their respective fields and become icons of cultural pride and inspiration.
Limpopo is well known for its rich cultural heritage, which has given rise to household names such as Candy Tsa Mandebele, Sho Madjozi, Makhadzi, and Winnie Mashaba. These women have made significant strides in the music industry, representing their heritage and inspiring countless others through their talent, dedication, and perseverance.
Candy Tsa Mandebele
Candy Tsa Mandebele, born Candy Mokwena, is a renowned singer, songwriter, and actress whose career began in 1993. Known for her soulful voice and for singing in Khelobedu, a dialect of Northern Sotho, Candy first gained fame as a member of the group Shaka Bundu Girls. Her solo career took off with the release of her album “Siki (Five Cents)” in 2010, which showcased her unique sound and storytelling ability.
Candy’s contributions extend beyond her music. She starred in South Africa’s first Xitsonga telenovela, “Giyani: Land of Blood,” bringing her talents to a broader audience. Her work continues to celebrate and preserve her cultural heritage, making her a beloved figure in South African entertainment.

Makhadzi
Makhadzi, born Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, has become a household name in South African music, known for her energetic performances and hit songs like “Tshanda Vhuya.” She began her career as a dancer at the age of 12 and transitioned to music, releasing successful albums such as “Matorokisi” and “Kokovha.”
Makhadzi’s music, deeply rooted in Venda culture, has earned her numerous awards and a dedicated fan base. She established her record label, Makhadzi Entertainment, further cementing her role as a leader in the industry. Her journey from a young dancer to a celebrated artist exemplifies her resilience and dedication to her craft.
Winnie Mashaba
Dr. Winnie Mashaba is a revered South African traditional gospel artist whose music has been a source of inspiration and spiritual upliftment for over two decades. With 16 albums and numerous accolades to her name, she has established herself as a cornerstone of South African gospel music.
Winnie’s influence extends beyond music; she is also a television presenter on Dumisa TV, where she continues to inspire her audience. Her work reflects a deep commitment to her faith and community, making her a beloved figure in South African culture.
