When’s the right time to have a tombstone unveiling?

In contrast, for more conventional African traditions, especially in Limpopo, the right timing may need to correspond with when the deceased spirit transforms into an ancestor.

Secular ceremonies have no such requirements and may follow once the family is ready to unveil the tombstone in their own time. It is important to remember that each family has its customs and traditions, and as such, there is no set time frame to unveil a tombstone.

In many cases, a religious ceremony will be held at the family’s home, where they may include hymns and sermons. Afterwards, the family and other community members will trek toward the burial site, where the tombstone or memorial will be covered. At arrival, more hymns are sung, often accompanied by scripture readings and a sermon.

Who leads?

Once a passage from Psalms is read, the tombstone unveiling begins, and the inscription is read to all in attendance by either a priest, MC, or a chosen family member. The Lord’s Prayer is sung, and a reception will often follow, where the family and other guests will move from mourning to celebrating the life of those lost.

A reception after the tombstone unveiling

Post-unveiling receptions for the tombstone may vary in scale and can range from events such as luncheons, small family gatherings at the site of the tombstone, or a family dinner after the tombstone unveiling.

This reception offers friends and family a chance to reconnect with each other on a more solid footing. As the grieving process may have subsided, many will look forward to the future, taking a philosophical approach and remembering with fondness the life that is no longer with them.
