On August 17, 2024, in the quiet rural landscape of Onverwacht, Limpopo, a heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded. The day began like any other but soon became a nightmare that left the entire community reeling.
After a Clover truck allegedly dumped expired or soon-to-expire goods on a nearby farm, three individuals, two women and a man, entered the property to collect some discarded foodstuffs. Little did they know this innocent act would result in unimaginable horror.
Tragedy in the community
Among the victims was Mariah Makgato, a 47-year-old mother of four, whose life was cruelly cut short on that fateful day. Along with another woman, she was shot dead at the farm by an individual whose actions have since sparked outrage and disbelief across the nation.
The situation took a grotesque turn when the shooter removed the bodies of the two women and discarded them into pig stalls, where the pigs began consuming the upper part of Ms Makgato’s body. The sheer brutality of this act has left the citizens of Limpopo and the broader South African community in a state of shock and mourning.
As news of this horrific event spread, civil society groups, political leaders and ordinary citizens expressed outrage and profound sorrow. Calls for justice echoed throughout the nation as people struggled to comprehend the senseless violence that had taken place.
