A unique cultural and environmental heritage
Limpopo’s landscape comprises grassy plains and woodlands, concealing extensive stretches of land with numerous prehistoric secrets narrating the tale of ancient humans. Makapansgat Valley and Mapungubwe, the world-renowned heritage site, have yielded famous relics from the Stone Age and Iron Age eras.
Beyond its ancient heritage, the environment is home to the world’s largest baobab tree (an eccentric tree that looks as though it grows upside down).
Limpopo also has a unique cultural heritage where three distinct African languages are spoken. Here you will find the main spoken language is Sepedi (over 50% of the population), with Xitstonga, Tshivendi, as well as Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, English and Afrikaans making up the latter half. These languages are spoken by the three main ethnic groups of Pedi, Venda and Tsonga people. These unique ethnic groups were once part of three specific settlements conjoined to form the province as it is today.

With a uniquely South African heritage, Limpopo has various cities and towns, with (the largest city) Polokwane, as its cultural hub, while the provincial legislature is situated in Lebowakgomo. Other major cities and towns include Bela-Bela (Warmbad), Lephalale (Ellisras), Makhado (Louis Trichardt), Musina (Messina), Thabazimbi and Tzaneen.
Things to see and do in Limpopo
Visit Kruger National Park
Limpopo is home to a large part of the world-famous Kruger National Park. Here, you can experience the African bush at your leisure and possibly witness one of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) up close on a safari tour. For the more adventurous type, there are also numerous guided walks and drives available.
Explore the Modjadji Cycad Forest
Located near the town of Tzaneen, the Modjadji Cycad Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the oldest cycad trees in the world. These ancient trees are believed to be over 1,000 years old and represent an important role in the local culture.
A day at Mapungubwe National Park
Mapungubwe National Park is a relatively unknown gem located in the northern part of Limpopo. Here, you can see ancient ruins and artefacts that date back to the Iron Age and enjoy wildlife sightings.
Take a hot air balloon ride
Limpopo is a beautiful province, and one of the best ways to take in its natural beauty is by being adventurous and taking a hot air balloon ride. This experience will give you a bird’s eye view of the stunning landscapes, including the Soutpansberg Mountains and the Limpopo River.
Explore the Makapansgat Caves
The Makapansgat Caves are an important archaeological site located near Mokopane. Here, you come across recent discoveries and evidence of early human activity. An inspiring way to learn about the history of the area. The caves are also home to various unique rock formations and are a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
